Event Description

The Low Carbon Communities Challenge is a two-year programme to provide financial and advisory support to 20 ‘test-bed’ communities that are seeking to cut carbon emissions, support inward investment and foster community leadership.

It looks like a very exciting opportunity to draw down some significant funding for putting in place some nuts and bolts renewables/carbon reduction technologies. The Government is making £10 million available between the 20 successful applicants, and those communities can also expect support from a range of organisations who are partnering the Challenge, including the Energy Savings Trust and the Carbon Trust.

For the first round applicants we need to inform DECC of our intention to apply by midday on Wednesday 28 OCTOBER 2009

This will be a kick off meeting to explore ideas and how to go forward

Apologies but i will not be able to attend the meeting tonight as my children are unwell. If anyone has any questions for me, please feel free to contact me on 07740700981. I would be very interested in reading the minutes of the meeting. You can also e-mail me if you have any questions.

Apologies again.

Having read the letter we would apply under the 'second mover' applications? Gives a little more time and is less large capital intensive...?

It would be good to run this past Fiona sustainability officer at Wealden and also the PC and Nick Lamb so we can demonstrate the 'broad community involvement' aspect of any application....I will email to them to see if anything is happening anywhere else that they are aware off......

A very good idea. Along with that I would strongly advise looking at the lighting, workstations and possibly a power balancer for the park if the units are large enough. Things we can possibly discuss at the meeting.

One idea is to install solar panels on the roofs of the business park and even earn an income for the Transition group from the sales of the electricity.

any one is welcome - this first meeting will be to explore what initial ideas there are and work out a way to go forward.

As a solar PV installation company and an installer of low energy lighting and power balancers, may I suggest bringing along a business partner of mine whom is primerily M&E and has many years experience with heat pumps and solar thermal.

I see this initiative as the big chance for FR to step up a gear -- or several gears -- in moving towards the goals we outlined in the energy descent plan. We need to begin thinking right now what kind of scheme we should propose. To get the discussion going, could I suggest we invite Diego Portales to the first meeting so that he can talk about his low impact housing ideas? This (for other reasons) may also be a good time to secure land for this type of scheme.
