Transition Forest Row

A community in transition to a low carbon, sustainable, resilient life.

I've been forwarded this info:

Rescue Hens

We have recently rescued some free range, organic chickens which were doomed to be slaughtered as supermarkets will not buy eggs laid by hens over a year old. If you can offer any of these hens a home then we £2 per bird (non-profit) .

These are healthy birds, which will still lay as many, if not more, eggs than ornamental hens!

If you can offer them a good home then we will help with transporting the hens to you if need be.

There are still hundreds more birds facing slaughter on the 28th October, so if anyone else would like some - please get in touch!!!

No idea! Maybe they are hiding them? We found a load in the Rabbit hutch some time back, and I don't think the Rabbit was stealing them.
I was wathching them go into their coup last night and one was being a really slow in the door way, and got a "peck on the bum" for her trouble, which did the trick.
These new birds are much better at clearing the ground than the last lot. In a few short weeks they have done more clearance than the last lot managed in 6 months.

Think I must be jinxed. Of our 4 rescue hens (from this same batch!) we have had one egg to date! Whats your secret Phil?!

The one who was at the bottom ("Death-row chicken"... yes another rescue hen) went for the new ones, clearly not keen to be at the bottom of an even larger flock!
They've now been seperated into seperate flocks, no idea why.
New birds are popping out plenty of eggs though

excellent - that must be quite interesting to see them sort out the 'pecking order'!

We collected 6 of these and they are all doing well. They are busy figuring out their pecking order with the 5 we already have.
