Maybe a word of explanation is necessary. It amused me to think of Forest Row as a Transliteration Town, with the pun on "transition", and also as a marker of the international character of the village. It uses the transliteration tool in Google L...

One option that is close to me is the village hall and rendering it energy efficient. We (ie the village hall trustees) are planning a public consultation about the future of the hall in the new year, so the timing could work out, perhaps. Brad

Thanks Mike If there's no Council support then there will be no change to the local Planning Model and the consequence of this is that you won't be able to take on significant modification (such as over-insulation) or to allow the possibility of ...

Johnathan we don't have an official update report document on what we have done or achieved in Forest Row. No clear purpose for such a document identified - if we were funded by some external body then I guess that would be a requirement for them...

Is there a series of notes or any other overall guidance on the site as to the detail of what has been achieved so far in Forest Row? For instance, you're noted as a Transition Town in the "Transition Initiatives Primer" (communities in the UK ha...

Great idea. Can I chip in? The village hall was looking at doing a recipe book for fundraising too. Good idea not to get too diluted. Brad

Fern with fronds

I needed to get away from my computer and enjoy the small differences between things. What better thing to do than go and look at ferns in Highams wood? This is one of my favourite spots in the civil parish of Forest Row ever since I found the coppiced sweet chestnuts in a sea of bluebells last year. So, armed with Roger Phillips' splendid… Continue

Apples and pears. And plums and cherries

How old can apple trees be? Following up on my last post and the note about the PTES orchard survey project, I was at the NGS open day at Kidbrooke yesterday. While I was there I looked at the walled garden and its fruit trees in a bit more detail and then compared them… Continue

Our locality, its biodiversity and doing our bit

Now that everything has come to life, the landscape around us is buzzing. Driving over the forest the other day I stopped at Four Counties car park and had a short walk and enjoyed the amazing view across to the North and South Downs. The light was gorgeous so I was fairly pleased with the picture looking north-west:

Engagement

Intrigued by the term "unconference" that I read in a geeky article the other day, I've been reading more about processes and techniques for participatory action, sharing of information, and planning for the future. I suspect that we've all been to events that utilised some of these techniques, but I was amazed at the range of ideas people have had for having and sharing ideas, so this might initiate some thoughts locally about ways in which we can plan and facilitate events. It also has some re… Continue

Sea/food

Not exactly about Forest Row, but the lovely pictures on the Guardian site of marine wildlife off British shores appealed to me, being another reminder of the wondrous biodiversity around us. We went down to the beach at Cuckmere Haven on Sunday; it is one of my favourite habitats in Sussex and I always enjoy nosing in the rockpools and exploring the flora and fauna in the valley. The… Continue

Hello Brad

David Jonas suggested I leave a comment on your page. Myself and husband Graham are moving to Forest Row area at the end of the month (February) (from Godalming, also a transition town, though more recently than Forest Row).

I am keen to find work in the area and David thought you might be a good person to contact (he said you worked in internet publishing in Brighton).

My background is in magazine editing, journalism and, to a limited extent, public relations. I am very keen to find a suitable position and wondered if you might have any ideas or contacts in an appropriate area. Very grateful for any tips you are able to give, as very new to the area!

Very best wishes, Tonya Stewart

I've just found this gentle but clever little film - A World without Jam.. made by the WI.... have you seen it? May be helpful in a visioning type event with others....? Something to show during the film festival?....worth watching to the end of part 2 ! ;-)

PS - when saving potatoes to chit next year I have my ones that went green, does it matter if they are small or is there a size below which it is not worth planting them?

Hi Brad. Moving to FR in next month or so. I'd like to know more about the Festival and to offer help and resources: I have a couple of yurts that could be useful and a van that is suitable for a mobile office. I have some past experience in events and could offer some time to help. What say? Regards Stuart

Brad - go to www.topfoto.co.uk and in the search box write Forest Row. Look at the first ones. These negatives have just been turfed up in our collection. Good bit of Forest Row history!
