Transition Forest Row

A community in transition to a low carbon, sustainable, resilient life.

Dear transitioners,
Please find attached the current version of the local food guide (not directory!) that Juliet and I have been working on. We would welcome comments and your input. If you know of good local shops and producers of local food please let us know who they are - you can see who we have already by looking in this draft and more people's knowledge will really help extend this.

We have had great help from people keen on local food in Lingfield and Groombridge and several other very helpful contributions - thank you. We would love to be able to include some local eateries that promote local food but they seem a little thin on the ground - should we include pubs in Fletching and Speldhurst that do promote local food?

Those who are in the food group will know that we hope to have this on line also and think we are working with www.bigbarn.co.uk who have national coverage and lots of functionality and will let us pull in to www.forestrow.org , however for the moment we are focusing on the paper version to collate all the information which we hope will be finalised in Feb/March for distribution with the EDAP.

Our radius is 10 miles around FR, up to Tunbridge Wells, including Uckfield, up to Haywards Heath & Crawley, and just including Edenbridge. ish. I have put in specialist producers from a slightly wider radius eg lavender, 'champagne' and chocolate!

We will have to be careful that we print accurate data so please would you pass on any details that you have so we can collate and verify them.

Old Plaw Hatch Farm - community owned farm, partnered with Tablehurst, produces and sells unpasteurised dairy products (milk, cheese, cream, yoghurts), meat and vegetables along with some bought in produce. Has a public walking trail around the farm, regular guided farm walks and biodynamic apprenticeship scheme.

Old Plaw Hatch Farm, Plaw Hatch Lane, Sharpthorne, West Sussex, RH19 4JL. 01342 810201

Also the number I have for Harvest Supplies is 01342 823392. Maybe check with Dave?

Hope this helps x

Hi Rowena
I've had a quick look at this - Well done!
I didn't see:
Michael Hall Garden shop - believe non-MH-parents can buy there, it's an honour system
and Cherry Gardens Farm - Kate and Jonathan who used to run the garden and shop at Plaw Hatch, have set up their own now in Groombridge. They have a commitment to stocking almost exclusively seasonal food (most of the shop stocked their own stuff over the summer and even now at least half the shop is their own produce).
info@cherrygardensfarm.co.uk for more information.
Hope this helps and well done, it's a great idea.

Great, thanks Vania.

Annette was going to ask Dorothea whether or not MH actually want to be in this. I understand that they want to be parents and regulars first and foremost - but don't worry, we will find out and include them if Dorothea is willing.

thanks for cherry gardens contact link.

Just as a prompt to everyone, if you do have information on other places the more you can include here (a quick write up like Tali did), contact details etc really helps spread the load! THANK YOU

Hi Rowena,
is it only for food or do locally organically/biodynamically produced cut flowers count as well? I grow 1 acre of organic / biodynamic cut flowers, of which quite a lot get sold by Hilary Moore in her shops in Forest Row and Lewes. The rest gets sold through a wholesaler in Dartford, but hopefully there will be more florists / farm shops that would like to buy from me? I don't retail though.

It was envisaged that it was only for food. I'll discuss with Juliet. I imagine we might mention you in the 'local shops having local produce' section towards the end, however we could then be getting into other things like hay and straw perhaps or tree saplings..? A good question - we'll come back to you!
Thanks for the comment.

Pleasure, and sorry I didn't give you all Cherry Gardens Farm details - email was the only info I had... could tell you how to get there though!

Great. Have you thought about adding this online as well? Could add each item as a suitably tagged blog post, perhaps.

Ah yes, having just re-read your post, you are doing something along those lines. Jolly good. (Keep up, Brad)
